The Slur-Tones

Fabian and Yannick in action

2008 was a fantastic year for MAC band 'The Slur-Tones'. After the previous two years winning MAC and Regional Rockquests with their former band lineup known as ‘The Strutts', the band reforms, reinvents and emerges as 'The Slur-Tones'. Fabian Shaw (guitar/vocals) and Yannick Weastell (bass) were joined by hostel student Alister Mawhinney (drums).

The Slur-Tones' year went something like this…

February 2008

Their new song ‘Crazy Lady' premiers at  the Rippon Music Festival alongside massive New Zealand acts such as Shihad, Kora and Shapeshifter.

July 2008

The Slur Tones win the Southern Lakes Regional Smokefree Rockquest Final for the third year running and then go on to win a place among the final six bands that will compete in the National Rockquest Grand Final.

September 2008

Alister in action

'Crazy Lady' wins best song at the Grand Final and The Slur-Tones are unlucky to just miss the top spot as they finish second in the country.

Vicki Anderson in her review in Christchurch paper The Press said that:

“ I can see each finalist having a long and prosperous career in music – they were each that good! Scoring second place and winning Best Song for their catchy tune, Crazy Lady were The Slur-Tones from Wanaka.
Imagine if Franz Ferdinand merged with The Mint Chicks, and you’re there. The Yellow jacketed guitarist/vocalist Fabian Shaw is simply gifted. Each song the Slur-Tones performed at the final could stand up on any radio station in the land and I look forward to hearing more from them.”

Post Script

All three boys are living together in Wellington this year. Alister and Fabian are at the New Zealand School of Music studying Jazz and Yannick is doing a DJing course at Whitirea Polytechnic.  They spend all their spare time rehearsing and have just done their first gig!
